When Dental Crowns Are Needed
- To restore an already broken tooth that cannot support a filling
- To restore a tooth after a root canal
- To hold dental bridges in place
- To cover dental implants
- To cover a discolored tooth
- To cover a tooth that has a large filling and when there is minimal tooth structure left
Dental Crown Procedure
The treatment involves two visits to the dental office. During the first visit, x-rays are taken to check the supporting structure and root of the tooth. After numbing the area, the tooth is prepped for the crown.
An impression is then taken to send to the lab to make the permanent crown. A temporary crown is made and cemented to the prepared tooth until the permanent crown can be inserted.
How to Take Care of Your Temporary Crown
- Avoid sticky and hard-to-chew foods
- Minimize the use of the side of your mouth with the temporary crown
- When flossing, pull the floss through rather than lifting it out
During the second visit, the temporary crown is removed and the tooth is cleaned of any debris. The permanent crown is then tried to check the fit and aesthetics. The bite is checked and adjustments are made if necessary. The crown is then permanently cemented.
